Academic Communications

Academic Communications is an open-access, multidisciplinary journal dedicated to the rapid publication of original research across the natural sciences and engineering. We are published by Buir Lake Laboratories Limited, an independent research laboratory based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Why this journal exists

Researchers everywhere spend a disproportionate share of their time writing and revising manuscripts — time that rightly belongs to thinking and experimenting. A published paper is, at its core, the presentation layer of the work: a way to show results and communicate with peers. If that layer becomes shorter and more reliable, the science gets back more of its own time.

Traditional journals still take months — sometimes years — to move a finished study from inbox to readership. Preprint servers solved the speed problem, but at a price: no editorial filter, no scholarly issue number, and no lasting venue for continued citation. Newer AI-only platforms attempt the opposite — automated drafting with automated review — and risk becoming low-quality venues the serious community will eventually discount.

Academic Communications occupies the middle ground: AI-assisted manuscript preparation for authors who want it, editor-led screening for every submission, and continuous rolling publication with proper issue numbering — so that good research, from anywhere, reaches readers in days rather than quarters, in a venue that remains citable and discoverable over time.

How we publish

We adopt a continuous publication model: articles are published individually as soon as they pass editorial screening, without waiting for a traditional issue to be assembled. Each year constitutes one volume with a single ongoing issue. There are no page limits and no article-queuing delays.

Every accepted article receives a permanent DOI, is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0), and is freely readable, downloadable, and redistributable. We charge no article-processing fee during the founding period.

AI-assisted publishing

Authors may use our integrated AI writing assistant to produce a publication-structured first draft from raw research materials — slides, data, notes, or an earlier manuscript. Every AI-assisted submission is clearly disclosed to readers, and goes through the same editorial screening as a hand-written manuscript. The AI is a drafting tool; scientific judgement and the final decision rest with the editors and the author.
